I had such a great time with my rental from El Gringo’s. The whole transaction was extremely smooth, Chris was a... fantastic guy, the bike was great, everything about the experience was perfect.I was visiting from the US and in Tamarindo for a few days so I rented the bike and kept it for my whole time there. I had parking behind a locked gate at my AirBnB and it worked out perfectly keeping the bike.I had several short rides in my few days with the bike and it was awesome. The XR150 is all you need to explore Tamarindo and there is plenty of exploring to do. The town is great and it doesn’t take three minutes even if you’re staying right downtown to get out into some great back-country riding.I had 100% confidence in the XR150. I’ve had bikes where you’re a little hesitant to shut them off — not so with the XR150. I had no worries about shutting it off and getting off the bike even in some pretty out-of-the way areas.The XR150 has a rear rack. I brought a Wolfman dry bag and a couple of straps and I was similarly equipped to back home in five minutes.I brought all my gear from home. Alpinestars boots, mesh jacket, helmet, and gloves. I just checked them in a big duffel bag. For $30, it was well-worth having all my own gear. Chris said: “You know who wears boots in this country? You . . . and me.” Definitely bring your boots. Your ankle doesn’t know the difference between Tamarindo and back home and you don’t want to lose days out of your trip tracking down healthcare for a broken ankle that boots would have prevented.At home I ride a Yamaha XT250 and a Suzuki VanVan a lot so I’m used to small bikes, but if you only ride bigger bikes and you’re worried the XR150 is too small, don’t worry at all. The XR150 is the right tool for the job. With the size and type of roads in Guanacaste Province, the XR150 is perfectly at home. You see them all over the place in Guanacaste. In San Jose I noticed a higher proportion of Chinese bikes but in Guanacaste it seems like the XR150 rules the day. I saw one or two foreigners on big GS1200 kinds of bikes that maybe they rode down there and they looked very much out of place. The XR150 will easily get you where you need to go in Guanacaste. I drove a RAV4 from San Jose to Manuel Antonio on very small back roads, and the XR150 would have been perfect for that. I drove the RAV4 from Manuel Antonio to Tamarindo on larger roads and the XR150 would have been fine but not ideal for those roads where you can sometimes cruise at 80kph.If you’re based out of Tamarindo and you want to ride every day, get the XR150. You’ll be glad you did.Chris is a very knowledge, helpful, friendly guy who wants to help you have fun. He maintains his bikes very well and has a lot of experience maintaining a fleet in much more logistically demanding environments than Guanacaste Province where he’s got access to a Honda dealership down the road and at least another couple of them within 50 miles.If you’re planning a trip to the Tamarindo area and you want to ask me some questions about the experience, you can find me at my website scottboyan.com where I’ll also have some videos I took on El Gringo’s bike.read more
